Side effects of Indometacin - Indocin

Continuous use of Indometacin - Indocin drug may result in certain serious side effects, which reduces the preventing capacity in human body. Since this drug is inhibiting both the COX-1 and COX-2, it inhibits the production of prostaglandins in intestines and stomach that maintain the mucous lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, continuous and regular usage of this medicine will result in peptic ulcers just like other nonselective COX inhibitors.

Such ulcers that affect human body due to this drug will result serious bleeding and perforation requiring immediate hospitalization for the patient. Experienced doctors will prefer the Indometacin - Indocin drug in the lowest dosage for reducing the possibilities of the affecting peptic ulcers. Taking this medicine in the lowest dosage will provide the best therapeutic effect for the patient without any side effects. The normal dosage of this medicine ranges between 50mg and 200mg per day.

Another major side effect that affect human body due to the over dosage of this drug is that, it will reduce aldosterone level and plasma rennin activity. Some times the sodium and potassium retention may be increased due to the over dosage of Indometacin drug. Over usage of this drug will result in enhanced effects of vasopressin, if the patient is having such problems. Together with the above stated side effects, the usage of Indometacin - Indocin drug may also cause hyperkalemia, edema, hypernatremia and hypertention that will seriously affect human body. This drug may cause serious renal damages such as chronic nephritis, acute renal failure and nephritic syndrome as well as serum creatine elevations.
